Tyson Fury champ (for now) but who’s the next contender?
After the shock win on Saturday, it took former champion Wladimir Klitschko A little over an hour to demand a rematch, and it is likely that at least one of the governing bodies will back his claim.
Out of the shadows, the biggest names in boxing have now formed an orderly queue, each one ‘calling out’ Fury, and why wouldn’t you? However, with the power now sat in the Fury camp, it’s easier to pick out who he wouldn’t want to fight over than who he would.
Anthony Joshua – The Olympic gold medalist is ranked in the top 15 by all four governing bodies, WBC ranking him the highest at second behind Alexander Povetkin. People may say ‘it’s too soon’, but is it?
Deontay Wilder – The American is a hard hitting loose cannon. A danger to everyone (including himself) in the ring. He’d be a risk to take on, and would certainly take the fight to Fury.
Wladimir Klitschko – REMATCH already demanded, but will it be a blockbuster?
David Haye – The man on a comeback, however he seems desperate to fight anyone right now. I think he’d take on a little old lady at a bus stop if it was televised
Ruslan Chagaev – Ruslan Chagaev is the ‘other’ WBA heavyweight champion, and obviously has a right to throw his hat in.
Shannon Briggs – He’s been buzzing around Klitschko for years, and not ranked all that well. However the ‘War of the Words’ would be legendary with these two, with a very interesting build up to the fight.
Vitali Klitschko – ‘I’m telling my big brother on you’. Vitali has gained revenge on two of the previous three men to beat Wladimir, and (given the chance) could do again.
So, if you were in Fury’s shoes, and enjoyed that new shiny belt, who would you fight next? No doubt Fury / Joshua alone could fill out Wembley nowadays, so is it wiser to handpick his contender, and keep hold of the title for at least one more bout? I hope the rematch with Klitschko is denied, as the last fight wasn’t really one to remember.
